Wandsworth's homes

Wandsworth: what a survey usually turns up

Housing across Wandsworth and the surrounding South West London area is largely substantial Victorian and Edwardian houses, interwar semis and detached homes, and a large number of period conversions, built through the 1880s through the 1930s. When we open a hatch here, the most common finding is not an absence of insulation but an insufficiency of it — a layer that was correct when fitted and has since been overtaken by both the guidance and the price of energy.

The second most common finding is a ventilation problem. Insulating a loft floor makes the roof space colder, and a colder roof space condenses more readily. Where a previous installer packed material tight into the eaves, the roof has lost the airflow it depends on and the homeowner has a damp loft they blame on the insulation rather than on the installation.

Add to that the local factor — a high proportion of lofts here have already been converted or partly converted, which moves the insulation from the floor to the rafters — and you have most of what a Wandsworth survey is checking for.

Five ways we keep Wandsworth homes warm

Every one of these begins with the same free survey and ends with a fixed price agreed before anything starts.

Rolls and stacked sheets of SuperFOIL multifoil insulation in a converted London loft

Where a Wandsworth loft has already been converted, insulation has to follow the rafters rather than the floor. SuperQuilt does that in 40mm instead of the 200mm-plus a wool build-up would need.

Loft boarding

Storage-ready

Storage that does not flatten your insulation. We raise the deck on battens so the full depth survives underneath — the version most Wandsworth lofts should have had first time.

Loft ladders

Fitted in a day

Many older Wandsworth hatches are too small for a ladder to swing through safely. We measure at survey and price any enlargement up front rather than on the day.

All-in-one

For Wandsworth homeowners who want the roof space to stop being a problem and start being storage: everything, in a day.

Questions & answers

Wandsworth loft insulation — common questions

What happens to the water tank and pipes?

Pipes get lagged and the tank gets insulated on the sides and top only. Leaving the base open is deliberate — it is the only thing preventing a frozen tank in a hard winter.

Can I still use my Wandsworth loft for storage afterwards?

Absolutely. The only wrong way to do it is to board flat onto the joists. We raise the deck on battens or loft legs, board it in tongue-and-groove panels and leave the eaves clear so the roof keeps ventilating.

Will this improve my EPC rating?

Very likely. Without documentation an assessor will often default to a pessimistic assumption about what is in the loft, so we make sure you have the paperwork to show them.

How long does the work take in a typical Wandsworth home?

Half a day for insulation alone; a full day for a combined job with boarding, lighting and a ladder. Very large Wandsworth lofts or heavy strip-outs occasionally run into a second morning, and we tell you that in advance.

Will insulating my loft cause damp?

Not if it is done properly. Insulating the floor makes the roof space colder, so moisture condenses more readily — the defence is the ventilation path at the eaves. Blocking it with insulation is what creates damp lofts. We keep it clear on every job. Our ventilation guide explains the mechanism.

Can you fit a loft ladder at the same time?

Yes, and it is cheaper done together. The one thing to check is the hatch: many older Wandsworth openings are too small for a ladder to swing through safely, so enlargement may be needed. We measure at survey and price it up front. See loft ladders.
