Battersea: what a survey usually turns up
Housing across Battersea and the surrounding South West London area is largely substantial Victorian and Edwardian houses, interwar semis and detached homes, and a large number of period conversions, built through the 1880s through the 1930s. When we open a hatch here, the most common finding is not an absence of insulation but an insufficiency of it — a layer that was correct when fitted and has since been overtaken by both the guidance and the price of energy.
The second most common finding is a ventilation problem. Insulating a loft floor makes the roof space colder, and a colder roof space condenses more readily. Do you remove the old insulation?
It depends what is up there. Cross-laying a new layer over sound existing material is both cheaper and perfectly correct. Failed, contaminated or loose-fill material is stripped, bagged and disposed of — slow work, and we show it as its own line on the quote.
Do I need planning permission in Battersea?
No. Loft insulation, boarding and loft ladders are all improvement works well outside planning control, in Battersea as everywhere else. A loft conversion — creating a habitable room with structural alterations — is different and normally needs building control approval. We do not carry out conversions.

Can you fit a loft ladder at the same time?
Certainly. Doing the ladder in the same visit means the boarding is planned around where the ladder lands, which is considerably better than retrofitting one to a deck that was not designed for it.
Will insulating my loft cause damp?
Not if it is done properly. Insulating the floor makes the roof space colder, so moisture condenses more readily — the defence is the ventilation path at the eaves. Blocking it with insulation is what creates damp lofts. We keep it clear on every job. Our ventilation guide explains the mechanism.
