South West London loft specialists
Whether you are in a period terrace, an interwar semi or something considerably more recent, we specify insulation for the roof it is actually going into. Merton homes get a free survey, a fixed price and work carried out to current recommended standards.

Why it matters
Which is why a free survey is worth half an hour of your time — the measurement itself usually settles whether a Merton loft is worth spending anything on.
Merton's homes
Like much of South West London, Merton is built largely of substantial Victorian and Edwardian houses, interwar semis and detached homes, and a large number of period conversions. Housing of that age has a particular relationship with heat: solid or early cavity walls, single-glazed openings replaced piecemeal over the years, and a roof void that was simply a void until somebody decided to put something in it.
The roof is where the largest single share of that heat goes, and it is also the cheapest part of the building to improve. There is no structural work, no planning permission, no scaffolding and no disruption beyond a day with the hatch open. For most Merton homeowners it is the first upgrade that makes clear financial sense and the last one they get round to.
The complication locally is that a high proportion of lofts here have already been converted or partly converted, which moves the insulation from the floor to the rafters.
Our services in Merton
Every one of these begins with the same free survey and ends with a fixed price agreed before anything starts.

A/A+ fire rated and around 40mm thick. For Merton properties where deepening the rafters is impractical, this is what makes the numbers work.

The standard job, done to standard: two layers, the second laid across the joists to kill the cold bridge, eaves left clear. Most Merton lofts are finished in half a day.

Boards laid straight onto joists crush 270mm into 100mm. We batten out instead, so Merton homeowners get usable storage and keep the insulation they paid for.

The thing that turns a loft you avoid into one you use. Grab rails and a boarded landing area where the design allows.

Insulation, boarding, lighting and a ladder handled together in one visit — cheaper and better sequenced than buying the four separately.
Describe the property and what is bothering you about it, and we will recommend the right combination — or tell you that nothing needs doing.

Questions & answers
The recommended 270mm, achieved in two layers: the first between the joists, the second laid across them to eliminate the cold bridge through the timber. Skipping that second cross-lay is one of the most common shortcuts in the trade.
No. Loft insulation, boarding and loft ladders are all improvement works well outside planning control, in Merton as everywhere else. A loft conversion — creating a habitable room with structural alterations — is different and normally needs building control approval. We do not carry out conversions.
We price Merton jobs after a free survey, itemised so you can see what the insulation, any boarding and any removal each cost. There is no call-out charge and the figure does not move once it is written. The London cost guide explains what drives it.
They end up above the new insulation line, in a colder space than before, so they must be lagged. The cold water tank is insulated on its sides and lid but never underneath — the warmth rising from the house is what keeps it from freezing. We handle this as part of the job.
Very likely. Without documentation an assessor will often default to a pessimistic assumption about what is in the loft, so we make sure you have the paperwork to show them.
It can if the ventilation is ignored, which is why we check it before anything comes off the van. If we find an existing condensation problem in a Merton loft, we deal with the cause first rather than insulating over it.
