The roofs over Lambeth are mostly slate and tile pitched roofs, with many terraces running unbroken for a considerable length, and they were built during the 1860s through the 1930s for a housing market with no expectation of thermal performance. Do I need planning permission in Lambeth?
No. Loft insulation, boarding and loft ladders are all improvement works well outside planning control, in Lambeth as everywhere else. A loft conversion — creating a habitable room with structural alterations — is different and normally needs building control approval. We do not carry out conversions.
What happens to the water tank and pipes?
They end up above the new insulation line, in a colder space than before, so they must be lagged. The cold water tank is insulated on its sides and lid but never underneath — the warmth rising from the house is what keeps it from freezing. We handle this as part of the job.
Will insulating my loft cause damp?
Correctly installed, no. The risk comes from packing material hard into the eaves and sealing off the airflow the roof depends on. We stop the insulation short and use eaves trays where the pitch requires them.
