Why Greenwich houses lose more heat than they should
Most of Greenwich was built during the 1880s through the 1930s, and its roofs are typically pitched tile and slate roofs with reasonable head height, and hipped ends on the interwar semis that reduce the usable void. Nothing about that construction is defective — these are, for the most part, sound, well-built houses. They were simply designed for a world where heating was cheap and thermal performance was not something anyone measured.
Bolting modern expectations onto that fabric is largely a matter of doing a few things properly rather than doing many things at all. Full-depth insulation at ceiling level, a ventilation path that has not been blocked, a hatch that is sealed rather than left as a hole, and boarding that sits above the wool instead of on top of it. Get those four right and the loft stops being the weak point.
Bear in mind too that hipped roofs on 1930s semis cut the usable loft area down sharply at the corners, which changes how much of it is worth boarding.
