Loft insulation in Blackheath

Our installers work in Blackheath and across the wider South East London area every week, which means we know what is behind the hatch before we open it. That familiarity is why our quotes hold and why the job usually takes a day rather than three.

Why it matters

The case for insulating your Blackheath loft

25%of a home's heat is lost through an uninsulated roof
1 in 5UK lofts are under-insulated or have the wrong material

90%less radiant heat loss with SuperQuilt multifoil

Put against current energy prices, a Blackheath loft still carrying 100mm of settled wool is costing its owner money every single winter it stays that way.

Blackheath's homes

The character of Blackheath roofs

Blackheath is a good illustration of how South East London was built. The stock here runs to Victorian and Edwardian terraces on the older high ground, extensive interwar semi-detached suburbs, and post-war estates, and the roofs are predominantly pitched tile and slate roofs with reasonable head height, and hipped ends on the interwar semis that reduce the usable void. Within a single street you can find a loft you can stand up and walk around in, and one three doors along where the only sensible approach is to work on your knees.

That variation is exactly why we survey before quoting. Two lofts of identical floor area can differ by a substantial margin in price because one has 150mm joists and a wide hatch, and the other has shallow, irregular timbers, a 400mm opening and a cold water tank sitting in the middle of the run.

Locally, hipped roofs on 1930s semis cut the usable loft area down sharply at the corners, which changes how much of it is worth boarding — worth knowing before you compare quotes.

Five ways we keep Blackheath homes warm

Every one of these begins with the same free survey and ends with a fixed price agreed before anything starts.

Rolls and stacked sheets of SuperFOIL multifoil insulation in a converted London loft

Where a Blackheath loft has already been converted, insulation has to follow the rafters rather than the floor. SuperQuilt does that in 40mm instead of the 200mm-plus a wool build-up would need.

Installer laying timber battens over mineral wool loft insulation ready for boarding

Mineral wool cross-laid to the 270mm depth current regulations recommend. For most Blackheath homes this is the single highest-value thing you can do to the building.

Loft boarding

Storage-ready

Storage that does not flatten your insulation. We raise the deck on battens so the full depth survives underneath — the version most Blackheath lofts should have had first time.

Timber loft ladder lowered onto a landing in a British home

Loft ladders

Fitted in a day

Fixed, stable access instead of a stepladder on the landing. Timber, aluminium or concertina, chosen to suit the space your Blackheath home actually has.

Loft makeovers

All-in-one

The whole loft dealt with at once, for one fixed price. Most Blackheath properties are finished within a day.

Questions & answers

Blackheath loft insulation — common questions

Can I still use my Blackheath loft for storage afterwards?

Absolutely. The only wrong way to do it is to board flat onto the joists. We raise the deck on battens or loft legs, board it in tongue-and-groove panels and leave the eaves clear so the roof keeps ventilating.

Can you fit a loft ladder at the same time?

Certainly. Doing the ladder in the same visit means the boarding is planned around where the ladder lands, which is considerably better than retrofitting one to a deck that was not designed for it.

Do you remove the old insulation?

Only when it needs to go. Sound, dry wool can be topped over, which saves you the removal cost. Material that is damp, vermin-fouled or collapsed does come out, and we bag it and take it away. Which applies to your Blackheath loft is established at survey and priced separately.
