Loft insulation in Fulham

Fulham sits in West London, where the housing is dominated by Victorian terraces, large Edwardian villas, extensive interwar suburban development and post-war blocks. Much of it was insulated to a standard that has since been superseded twice over. We put that right — properly, in a day, for a price agreed in advance.

Why it matters

The case for insulating your Fulham loft

25%of a home's heat is lost through an uninsulated roof

Put against current energy prices, a Fulham loft still carrying 100mm of settled wool is costing its owner money every single winter it stays that way.

Heat loss in Fulham: where it goes

In a typical Fulham property built during the 1880s through the 1930s, the roof accounts for the largest single share of heat loss of any element in the building envelope. Warm air rises, the ceiling is thin, and above it sits a ventilated void at close to outdoor temperature for most of the winter.

The good news is that this is the cheapest part of the fabric to improve, by a long way. Wall insulation is disruptive and expensive. Window replacement is a major capital cost. Loft insulation is a day's work with materials that cost very little relative to what they save, and it needs no permissions of any kind.

The one local caveat: the 1930s suburban expansion here produced thousands of near-identical semis, which means the same loft problems repeat street after street. We factor that in at survey stage.

Five ways we keep Fulham homes warm

Every one of these begins with the same free survey and ends with a fixed price agreed before anything starts.

Rolls and stacked sheets of SuperFOIL multifoil insulation in a converted London loft

At roughly 40mm, multifoil delivers serious performance without stealing headroom — which is why it is the answer for Fulham homes with a room in the roof or a sloping ceiling.

Installer laying timber battens over mineral wool loft insulation ready for boarding

Mineral wool cross-laid to the 270mm depth current regulations recommend. For most Fulham homes this is the single highest-value thing you can do to the building.

Loft boarding

Storage-ready

Boards laid straight onto joists crush 270mm into 100mm. We batten out instead, so Fulham homeowners get usable storage and keep the insulation they paid for.

Loft ladders

Fitted in a day

Many older Fulham hatches are too small for a ladder to swing through safely. We measure at survey and price any enlargement up front rather than on the day.

For Fulham homeowners who want the roof space to stop being a problem and start being storage: everything, in a day.

Questions & answers

Fulham loft insulation — common questions

What happens to the water tank and pipes?

Insulating the loft floor makes everything above it colder, including your tank and pipework. Lagging is therefore part of the work rather than an optional extra, and we will point out anything that looks like it will need attention.

How long does the work take in a typical Fulham home?

Most Fulham lofts are insulated to full depth in half a day. Adding raised boarding takes it to a full day, and fitting a ladder at the same time adds a couple of hours. We give you the expected duration with the quote, not on the morning.

What insulation depth do you fit?

The recommended 270mm, achieved in two layers: the first between the joists, the second laid across them to eliminate the cold bridge through the timber. Skipping that second cross-lay is one of the most common shortcuts in the trade.

Do you remove the old insulation?

Only when it needs to go. Sound, dry wool can be topped over, which saves you the removal cost. Material that is damp, vermin-fouled or collapsed does come out, and we bag it and take it away. Which applies to your Fulham loft is established at survey and priced separately.
