Loft insulation in Bermondsey

Insulation is the one home improvement that starts paying you back on the next heating cycle rather than in a decade. We fit it across Bermondsey — to full depth, with the eaves kept clear and the hatch sealed, which is where most jobs quietly go wrong.

Why it matters

The case for insulating your Bermondsey loft

25%of a home's heat is lost through an uninsulated roof

For a Bermondsey homeowner the practical upshot is simple — the loft is the first upgrade worth making and the one most likely to have been done to an outdated standard.

Bermondsey's homes

Bermondsey: what a survey usually turns up

Housing across Bermondsey and the surrounding South East London area is largely Victorian and Edwardian terraces on the older high ground, extensive interwar semi-detached suburbs, and post-war estates, built through the 1880s through the 1930s. When we open a hatch here, the most common finding is not an absence of insulation but an insufficiency of it — a layer that was correct when fitted and has since been overtaken by both the guidance and the price of energy.

The second most common finding is a ventilation problem. Insulating a loft floor makes the roof space colder, and a colder roof space condenses more readily. Where a previous installer packed material tight into the eaves, the roof has lost the airflow it depends on and the homeowner has a damp loft they blame on the insulation rather than on the installation.

Add to that the local factor — hipped roofs on 1930s semis cut the usable loft area down sharply at the corners, which changes how much of it is worth boarding — and you have most of what a Bermondsey survey is checking for.

Five ways we keep Bermondsey homes warm

Every one of these begins with the same free survey and ends with a fixed price agreed before anything starts.

Rolls and stacked sheets of SuperFOIL multifoil insulation in a converted London loft

Multifoil earns its place in Bermondsey roofs where depth is the binding constraint — period timbers, low headroom, or a conversion already boarded out.

Topping up from the 100mm many Bermondsey houses still have to a full 270mm is the cheapest meaningful energy improvement available to a UK homeowner.

Storage-ready

Boards laid straight onto joists crush 270mm into 100mm. We batten out instead, so Bermondsey homeowners get usable storage and keep the insulation they paid for.

Questions & answers

Bermondsey loft insulation — common questions

How much does loft insulation cost in Bermondsey?

Price depends on the loft's floor area, the depth and condition of anything already up there, how easy the space is to move around in, and whether old material has to be removed. That is why every Bermondsey quote follows a free survey rather than a phone call. Once given, the price is fixed. Our cost guide sets out each variable.

What happens to the water tank and pipes?

They end up above the new insulation line, in a colder space than before, so they must be lagged. The cold water tank is insulated on its sides and lid but never underneath — the warmth rising from the house is what keeps it from freezing. We handle this as part of the job.

Will this improve my EPC rating?

Usually, and often noticeably. Loft insulation depth is recorded directly by the assessor, so increasing it from 100mm to 270mm generally moves the rating. We hand over product documentation and declared performance figures so your assessor records what is actually there.

Will insulating my loft cause damp?

Correctly installed, no. The risk comes from packing material hard into the eaves and sealing off the airflow the roof depends on. We stop the insulation short and use eaves trays where the pitch requires them.

What insulation depth do you fit?

The recommended 270mm, achieved in two layers: the first between the joists, the second laid across them to eliminate the cold bridge through the timber. Skipping that second cross-lay is one of the most common shortcuts in the trade.

Do I need planning permission in Bermondsey?

None of the work we do requires planning permission. If your Bermondsey property is listed or in a conservation area, that affects the roof covering and external alterations rather than insulation laid inside the roof space, though it is always worth mentioning at survey.
