What we find in Shoreditch roof spaces
The roofs over Shoreditch are mostly a mix of original slate, replacement concrete tile and flat or shallow roofs on later blocks, and they were built during the 1870s onwards, with heavy rebuilding after 1945 for a housing market with no expectation of thermal performance. Wartime damage and post-war rebuilding mean two adjoining houses on the same street can have entirely different roof construction, which is one more reason we measure rather than assume.
