Loft insulation in Shadwell

Cold upstairs rooms and a heating bill that keeps climbing usually have the same cause, and in Shadwell it is very often the roof. We survey the loft free of charge, measure what is genuinely up there, and quote a fixed price to bring it up to standard.

Why it matters

The case for insulating your Shadwell loft

25%of a home's heat is lost through an uninsulated roof

Put against current energy prices, a Shadwell loft still carrying 100mm of settled wool is costing its owner money every single winter it stays that way.

Shadwell's homes

Why Shadwell lofts need attention

Shadwell forms part of East London, an area whose housing is characterised by Victorian terraces, interwar council-built estates, post-war rebuilding and a great deal of recent conversion and new build. The bulk of it went up during the 1870s onwards, with heavy rebuilding after 1945, decades before insulation was a design consideration at all, and what sits above the ceilings today is usually a retrofit added at some point in the last fifty years to whatever standard was current at the time.

That matters because the standard has moved repeatedly. Lofts insulated in the 1980s typically received 100mm; earlier work was often 50mm or nothing. Current guidance is 270mm. A great many Shadwell houses therefore contain insulation that was entirely adequate when it was fitted and is now doing roughly a third of the work it should be — while the homeowner reasonably assumes the loft is 'done'.

Wartime damage and post-war rebuilding mean two adjoining houses on the same street can have entirely different roof construction. It is the sort of thing a survey establishes in ten minutes and a phone quote never can.

Our services in Shadwell

Five ways we keep Shadwell homes warm

Every one of these begins with the same free survey and ends with a fixed price agreed before anything starts.

Rolls and stacked sheets of SuperFOIL multifoil insulation in a converted London loft

Where a Shadwell loft has already been converted, insulation has to follow the rafters rather than the floor. SuperQuilt does that in 40mm instead of the 200mm-plus a wool build-up would need.

Installer laying timber battens over mineral wool loft insulation ready for boarding

Topping up from the 100mm many Shadwell houses still have to a full 270mm is the cheapest meaningful energy improvement available to a UK homeowner.

Loft boarding

Storage-ready

Boards laid straight onto joists crush 270mm into 100mm. We batten out instead, so Shadwell homeowners get usable storage and keep the insulation they paid for.

Loft ladders

Fitted in a day

Many older Shadwell hatches are too small for a ladder to swing through safely. We measure at survey and price any enlargement up front rather than on the day.

Loft makeovers

All-in-one

The whole loft dealt with at once, for one fixed price. Most Shadwell properties are finished within a day.

Questions & answers

Shadwell loft insulation — common questions

Do you work in the streets around Shadwell?

Yes — we cover Shadwell and the whole surrounding area, and our teams are usually working somewhere nearby on any given week. If your street is not obviously listed on our coverage page, ring us anyway; the list is not exhaustive.

Do you offer free surveys in Shadwell?

Yes. Every enquiry from Shadwell and the surrounding area starts with a free, no-obligation visit. We measure the loft, check the joists and ventilation, and write a fixed price afterwards. There is no call-out charge whether you proceed or not.

How long does the work take in a typical Shadwell home?

Most Shadwell lofts are insulated to full depth in half a day. Adding raised boarding takes it to a full day, and fitting a ladder at the same time adds a couple of hours. We give you the expected duration with the quote, not on the morning.
