Loft insulation in Epsom

If your Epsom loft has 100mm of flattened wool and a boarded patch balanced on the joists, you are not alone and you are losing money every winter. We fit insulation to the recommended 270mm depth, and raise any boarding clear so it keeps working.

Why it matters

The case for insulating your Epsom loft

25%of a home's heat is lost through an uninsulated roof
1 in 5UK lofts are under-insulated or have the wrong material
270mmthe depth current building regulations recommend
90%less radiant heat loss with SuperQuilt multifoil

None of this requires permissions, scaffolding or structural work. In Epsom, as anywhere, it is a day's work with materials that cost little relative to what they save.

Epsom's homes

The character of Epsom roofs

Epsom is a good illustration of how Surrey was built. The stock here runs to interwar and post-war detached and semi-detached homes, older village cores and a good deal of recent development, and the roofs are predominantly generous pitched roofs, frequently with modern trussed construction on the newer stock. Within a single street you can find a loft you can stand up and walk around in, and one three doors along where the only sensible approach is to work on your knees.

That variation is exactly why we survey before quoting. Two lofts of identical floor area can differ by a substantial margin in price because one has 150mm joists and a wide hatch, and the other has shallow, irregular timbers, a 400mm opening and a cold water tank sitting in the middle of the run.

Locally, modern trussed roofs have dense timber webbing that makes movement awkward, so boarding needs planning around the truss layout — worth knowing before you compare quotes.

Five ways we keep Epsom homes warm

Every one of these begins with the same free survey and ends with a fixed price agreed before anything starts.

Rolls and stacked sheets of SuperFOIL multifoil insulation in a converted London loft

A/A+ fire rated and around 40mm thick. For Epsom properties where deepening the rafters is impractical, this is what makes the numbers work.

Installer laying timber battens over mineral wool loft insulation ready for boarding

Mineral wool cross-laid to the 270mm depth current regulations recommend. For most Epsom homes this is the single highest-value thing you can do to the building.

Storage-ready

Storage that does not flatten your insulation. We raise the deck on battens so the full depth survives underneath — the version most Epsom lofts should have had first time.

Loft ladders

Fitted in a day

The thing that turns a loft you avoid into one you use. Grab rails and a boarded landing area where the design allows.

Loft makeovers

All-in-one

One team, one survey, one sequence of work. The insulation depth sets the batten height, the batten height sets the ladder landing — which is why doing it piecemeal costs more.

Questions & answers

Epsom loft insulation — common questions

Do I need planning permission in Epsom?

No. Loft insulation, boarding and loft ladders are all improvement works well outside planning control, in Epsom as everywhere else. A loft conversion — creating a habitable room with structural alterations — is different and normally needs building control approval. We do not carry out conversions.

Do you remove the old insulation?

It depends what is up there. Cross-laying a new layer over sound existing material is both cheaper and perfectly correct. Failed, contaminated or loose-fill material is stripped, bagged and disposed of — slow work, and we show it as its own line on the quote.

How much does loft insulation cost in Epsom?

Price depends on the loft's floor area, the depth and condition of anything already up there, how easy the space is to move around in, and whether old material has to be removed. That is why every Epsom quote follows a free survey rather than a phone call. Once given, the price is fixed. Our cost guide sets out each variable.

Do you offer free surveys in Epsom?

Always, and there is no charge or obligation attached. A survey takes around half an hour. We would rather spend it establishing what your Epsom loft actually needs than quote blind and revise the price later.

What happens to the water tank and pipes?

Pipes get lagged and the tank gets insulated on the sides and top only. Leaving the base open is deliberate — it is the only thing preventing a frozen tank in a hard winter.

Can I still use my Epsom loft for storage afterwards?

Yes, provided the boarding is raised. Screwing boards straight onto 100mm joists over 270mm of wool compresses it to a third of its depth and throws away most of what you paid for. We fit raised boarding on battens so the insulation stays at full depth underneath.
