Loft insulation in Enfield

Roughly a quarter of an uninsulated home's heat escapes through the roof. For Enfield homeowners that is the cheapest problem in the house to fix, and the one most likely to have been fixed badly the first time. We do it properly.

Why it matters

The case for insulating your Enfield loft

25%of a home's heat is lost through an uninsulated roof

For a Enfield homeowner the practical upshot is simple — the loft is the first upgrade worth making and the one most likely to have been done to an outdated standard.

Enfield's homes

Why Enfield houses lose more heat than they should

Most of Enfield was built during the 1870s through the 1930s, and its roofs are typically steeply pitched slate and clay tile roofs with usable, walkable voids above the top floor. Nothing about that construction is defective — these are, for the most part, sound, well-built houses. They were simply designed for a world where heating was cheap and thermal performance was not something anyone measured.

Bolting modern expectations onto that fabric is largely a matter of doing a few things properly rather than doing many things at all. Full-depth insulation at ceiling level, a ventilation path that has not been blocked, a hatch that is sealed rather than left as a hole, and boarding that sits above the wool instead of on top of it. Get those four right and the loft stops being the weak point.

Bear in mind too that many of the larger houses were divided into flats decades ago, so the loft often sits above a top-floor conversion with its own separate access.

Five ways we keep Enfield homes warm

Every one of these begins with the same free survey and ends with a fixed price agreed before anything starts.

Rolls and stacked sheets of SuperFOIL multifoil insulation in a converted London loft

At roughly 40mm, multifoil delivers serious performance without stealing headroom — which is why it is the answer for Enfield homes with a room in the roof or a sloping ceiling.

Installer laying timber battens over mineral wool loft insulation ready for boarding

The standard job, done to standard: two layers, the second laid across the joists to kill the cold bridge, eaves left clear. Most Enfield lofts are finished in half a day.

Loft boarding

Storage-ready

Boards laid straight onto joists crush 270mm into 100mm. We batten out instead, so Enfield homeowners get usable storage and keep the insulation they paid for.

All-in-one

Insulation, boarding, lighting and a ladder handled together in one visit — cheaper and better sequenced than buying the four separately.

Questions & answers

Enfield loft insulation — common questions

Can you fit a loft ladder at the same time?

We fit ladders alongside insulation and boarding routinely — it is one of the main reasons the combined makeover works out cheaper than booking the elements separately.

Will insulating my loft cause damp?

Not if it is done properly. Insulating the floor makes the roof space colder, so moisture condenses more readily — the defence is the ventilation path at the eaves. Blocking it with insulation is what creates damp lofts. We keep it clear on every job. Our ventilation guide explains the mechanism.

How long does the work take in a typical Enfield home?

A straightforward insulation job in a three-bedroom Enfield property is a half-day. Larger, cluttered or awkward-access lofts take longer, and stripping out failed material adds time — all of which is established at survey and reflected in the quote.

Will this improve my EPC rating?

Very likely. Without documentation an assessor will often default to a pessimistic assumption about what is in the loft, so we make sure you have the paperwork to show them.

Can I still use my Enfield loft for storage afterwards?

Yes, provided the boarding is raised. Screwing boards straight onto 100mm joists over 270mm of wool compresses it to a third of its depth and throws away most of what you paid for. We fit raised boarding on battens so the insulation stays at full depth underneath.

What happens to the water tank and pipes?

Pipes get lagged and the tank gets insulated on the sides and top only. Leaving the base open is deliberate — it is the only thing preventing a frozen tank in a hard winter.
