Loft insulation in Chertsey

Cold upstairs rooms and a heating bill that keeps climbing usually have the same cause, and in Chertsey it is very often the roof. We survey the loft free of charge, measure what is genuinely up there, and quote a fixed price to bring it up to standard.

Why it matters

The case for insulating your Chertsey loft

25%of a home's heat is lost through an uninsulated roof
1 in 5UK lofts are under-insulated or have the wrong material
270mmthe depth current building regulations recommend

None of this requires permissions, scaffolding or structural work. In Chertsey, as anywhere, it is a day's work with materials that cost little relative to what they save.

Chertsey's homes

Why Chertsey lofts need attention

Chertsey forms part of Surrey, an area whose housing is characterised by interwar and post-war detached and semi-detached homes, older village cores and a good deal of recent development. The bulk of it went up during the 1920s onwards, on much older village foundations, decades before insulation was a design consideration at all, and what sits above the ceilings today is usually a retrofit added at some point in the last fifty years to whatever standard was current at the time.

That matters because the standard has moved repeatedly. Lofts insulated in the 1980s typically received 100mm; earlier work was often 50mm or nothing. Current guidance is 270mm. A great many Chertsey houses therefore contain insulation that was entirely adequate when it was fitted and is now doing roughly a third of the work it should be — while the homeowner reasonably assumes the loft is 'done'.

Modern trussed roofs have dense timber webbing that makes movement awkward, so boarding needs planning around the truss layout. It is the sort of thing a survey establishes in ten minutes and a phone quote never can.

Five ways we keep Chertsey homes warm

Every one of these begins with the same free survey and ends with a fixed price agreed before anything starts.

Rolls and stacked sheets of SuperFOIL multifoil insulation in a converted London loft

Multifoil earns its place in Chertsey roofs where depth is the binding constraint — period timbers, low headroom, or a conversion already boarded out.

The standard job, done to standard: two layers, the second laid across the joists to kill the cold bridge, eaves left clear. Most Chertsey lofts are finished in half a day.

Loft ladders

Fitted in a day

Many older Chertsey hatches are too small for a ladder to swing through safely. We measure at survey and price any enlargement up front rather than on the day.

Loft makeovers

All-in-one

Insulation, boarding, lighting and a ladder handled together in one visit — cheaper and better sequenced than buying the four separately.

Questions & answers

Chertsey loft insulation — common questions

Will this improve my EPC rating?

Usually, and often noticeably. Loft insulation depth is recorded directly by the assessor, so increasing it from 100mm to 270mm generally moves the rating. We hand over product documentation and declared performance figures so your assessor records what is actually there.

Can you fit a loft ladder at the same time?

Certainly. Doing the ladder in the same visit means the boarding is planned around where the ladder lands, which is considerably better than retrofitting one to a deck that was not designed for it.

Do I need planning permission in Chertsey?

None of the work we do requires planning permission. If your Chertsey property is listed or in a conservation area, that affects the roof covering and external alterations rather than insulation laid inside the roof space, though it is always worth mentioning at survey.

Do you offer free surveys in Chertsey?

Always, and there is no charge or obligation attached. A survey takes around half an hour. We would rather spend it establishing what your Chertsey loft actually needs than quote blind and revise the price later.
